Best electricity plans for charging an EV at home
For a typical home using 4,200 kWh a year plus about 1,900 kWh of car charging (around 10,000 km), Electric Ireland Home Electric+ Smart (20% off) comes out cheapest at about €1,882 a year, charging at 17.89c per kWh. On the best 24-hour plan the same home pays about €2,119, €236 more. Rates checked 20 October 2026.

The home part uses a typical usage pattern priced on each plan's own day, night and peak rates. The car is charged in the plan's cheapest window: the EV hours on EV plans, the night rate on smart plans. EV plans pay off most when the car does most of its charging in that window; Electric Ireland Home Electric+ Night Boost (5.5% off) is the best of them here.

Prices include VAT, the supplier’s stated discount and the PSO levy (€6.67 a year). Standing charges differ for rural homes. Discounts usually last 12 months. Check the plan with the supplier before switching.
