Is a solar battery worth it in Ireland?
It depends mostly on how the battery is charged. Charged only from your panels, it mainly stores summer surplus you could otherwise export for about 19.5c a unit, so a big battery adds little. Charged as well on a cheap night or EV rate, it also works in winter, when the panels make little, replacing day and peak electricity at 34c or more.
For the typical system in FairWatt's community quotes, 9.1 kWp on a home using 4,200 kWh a year:
| Battery | Yearly saving, charged from panels only | Yearly saving, also charged on a cheap rate | Best plan for that setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| None | €1,860 | – | Electric Ireland Home Electric+ Smart (20% off) |
| 5 kWh | €1,979 | €2,038 | Electric Ireland Home Electric+ Smart (20% off), charging in its cheap hours |
| 10 kWh | €1,972 | €2,047 | Electric Ireland Home Electric+ Smart (20% off), charging in its cheap hours |
| 15 kWh | €1,968 | €2,038 | Electric Ireland Home Electric+ Smart (20% off), charging in its cheap hours |
Savings are against the same home with no solar on its cheapest plan, and include export payments at each plan's own rate. With cheap-rate charging, a 10 kWh battery adds about €187 a year over panels alone, against €112 if it only stores solar.
An electric car, a heat pump, or a home that uses most of its power in the evening makes a battery more worthwhile again. Try your own home in the solar, battery and car simulator below, where you can choose when the battery charges.

Test changes against your real readings
Each half hour of your data is re-run with these panels, battery and car, then every plan is re-priced.
Prices include VAT, the supplier’s stated discount and the PSO levy (€6.67 a year). Standing charges differ for rural homes. Discounts usually last 12 months. Check the plan with the supplier before switching.

Watch-outs
- A large deposit asked for before anyone has surveyed your roof.
- Pressure to sign today, or a discount that expires this week.
- No panel, inverter or battery brand named.
- A price far below the community median with no clear reason.
- Extras such as a gateway, changeover switch or scaffolding that appear only after you sign.
